Each year we have a number of events and/or gatherings which take place, where club members are actively involved. These are great ways to get to know other members, and help our sport thrive in and around Auckland.
This page lists some of the recent gaggles we have arranged.
When: Before the start of the new season
Summary: Our club members host at least one WOF event, where we assist members in ensuring their equipment has been checked over properly and ensure all wings and harnesses are airworthy.
When: Before the start of the new season
Summary: Our club members host a reserve repacking event, where we assist members in ensuring their equipment has been packed properly and help them understand the packing process which is provided with their reserve parachute by the manufacturer.
When: Throughout the year, with focus on preparing existing and new sites for the upcoming season.
Summary: In 2026 (and years prior) our members helped by tidying up the many launch sites we use over the course of several months. Without our members lending a hand many of our sites would become overgrown or inaccessible, so we highly recommend all members lend a hand at at least one working bee!
When: Ad-hoc
Summary: In order to solidify and extend our relationship with land-owners and/or those responsible for general maintenance (such as park ranges), we attend community based events such as the planting at Shakespear Regional Park on Auckland's Whangaparāoa peninsula where we helped plant nearly 10,000 native species.
When: Typically at the start or end of the XC season (April/October)
Summary: A gathering or informal event where pilots come together to fly, socialize, and share experiences. Often there is a club BBQ, and depending on weather we stay at a campground.
When: Before the start of the new season
Summary:
Annual Club Awards - we award the Flying Spirit award, and recognition for the longest cross-country (XC) flights - don't forget to nominate your peers!Committee Vacancies - we often need new members for our club committee, and sometimes a new club President - don't forget to nominate your peers!
Paragliding WOF's - this is sometime the last chance for club members to get a WOF (under supervision) so don't miss this!
The usual formalities - much like the NZHGPA AGM, but focused on local matters.
When: Before the start of the new season
Summary:
Electing Officers - Members vote on who will hold key leadership roles in the association (e.g. President, Treasurer, Safety Officer, etc.).
Reports & Updates: The current committee presents reports on the past year’s activities, including: Membership and finances, Safety and incidents, Competitions and events, Airspace and regulatory matters.
Rule Changes & Policy Decisions - Members discuss and vote on proposed changes to policies, safety protocols, or constitutional rules affecting the flying community.
Member Involvement - It's an opportunity for members to have their say, raise concerns, suggest improvements, or volunteer for roles at the national level.
Networking - It also serves as a gathering of pilots and club representatives from around the country, making it a good chance to connect with the broader flying community.
When: Adhoc
Summary: Subsidised gatherings focussed specifically on socialisation. In recent years there have been a few, including one where pilots learned (or honed) their indoor lawn bowling skills
When: All year round.
Parawaiting on Moirs, Kario, Maukatia Bay, or North Head is a classic part of the paragliding experience in Auckland. We regularly gather at these sites with our gear ready, eyes on the sky, ear up our nostrels… and spend a lot of time waiting for the wind to play nice. This is always a great chance to catch up and get to know each other.
When: XC season (typically October - April)
Summary: Pilots attending regional or national competitions not only get a chance to learn a lot from other pilots, but a group BBQ/Dinner is almost always held on a suitable evening during the competition, and the competition is concluded with a prize-giving which is also typically a very social event.
If you would like to organise a comp, we have developed a tool to assist with all the admistration to make it easier to make it happen. The .html link below can be used, but as this is still in development, before you use it, please contact Tony Ross.
