Man-made thermals

While talking about the idea of a winch at Drury, there was a discussion about how hit-and-miss catching a thermal was from a single-throw launch. So I googled the idea of a man-made thermal generator. What turned up was rather surprising....

This project actually seemed to have resulted in a genuine artificial thermal trigger

If this is in fact practical, it would seem to have a great potential for further development.
