Anyone flown Musick Point in a NE ?, would love to hear your experiences...landing options ? (not in the sea !), how soarable is the ridge ?, any ideas or advice would be welcomed...
Being a vertical cliff with lots of trees you need to understand the implications. I wouldnt fly it NE though because top landing is nasty if more than a little cross. East is best. You could land on the beach if you have to but when you drop out of the flow below the cliff you will fly fast so judge the beach landing well or tide it is. There is a track at the point back up. Its not really a beginner spot.
Glover Park is way better... The landing risk is similar, trees, tide, rocks, etc, but when its working you can always glide down to Saint Heliers Beach or Park which is fun. There is a small group that regularly fly there.
Awesome pic Brett !, I got the feeling that an easterly might be better although the site-guide says NE...I guess you could soar right down to Eastern beach and land tide permitting if top-landing wasn't an option ?. I suppose you top-landed the golf course ?.
I've flown there as well. Although its a site the bloody trees are a nightmare to launch around and the golfers aint too keen on you launching off their greens. With Bretts height its possible to soar along the ridge and land at Eastern Beach
Glover is better. Another set of issues there though. The takeoff is completely flat and has a rotor zone which means top landing is tricky at best.
Also....land at the bottom and you may be landing on a bottom if you get the picture.
I live nearby and have been trying to figure out the launch at Musick Point for ages. Which one are we talking about? Is it the clearing right at the end by the radio building with the step down in the grass? Likewise where is the top landing area?
The drop down in the grass near the green at the club house also looks good but not likely to please the members.
I've been flying off the southern end of Eastern Beach a bit lately in a NNE after Darren told me about it.
Paste these into a Placemark edit on Google Earth and where I take off is clear.

I have looked at where you mention but never tried it. The old actual launch is now overgrown by maturing Pohutukawa. Landing is where ever you want really. I have landed and played about on the cliffs along the golf course fairways, but out of courtesy never near the Clubhouse in case they get upset. But when flying in front of it you always get curious waves from Golfers. This is another place that is seldom used but quite fun and handy to those in the east.
If the weather ever stops raining and there is a nice easterly I am keen.
Brett I went and checked out that spot this afternoon. Man it's cold.
So do you launch directly in front of that little concrete hut where there is a small gully running between the trees? What sort of wind strength gets you the height you had in the photo?
I also checked it out about 50 metres to the south directly beside the tee. That also looks good but again a bit of a risk with the golf club.
Awesome video mate !. I was looking the take off at the south end of eastern Beach the other day. From a Hang gliding point of view the trees.bush out the front from takeoff look like they could do with a trim !. Still....I guess if the wind was strong enough for reasonable lift then the ridge looks like small but very flyable area !. Also good landing down on the beach especially at low tides. Any Hang Glider pilots flown this site with any advice ?. Keen to go with anyone whos interested when the right conditions appear ! :) 021 02738964
I have flown there
I have flown there occasionally, nice view and good height can be made for a little ridge.
Here is a pic I took in January I think http://www.cloudbase.org.nz/node/604
