MOIRS HILL TRACK MAINTENANCE

WORKING BEE - Saturday 8th May 2010 - 9.30am to @1pm.
It is now the ideal time of year to do some track maintenance on our best local cross country site. The general idea is to get the water off the track
Proposed tasks will be
- Clearing out all existing run-offs to ensure they keep functioning over winter.
- Work to improve the new rough track around the fallen pine tree and make it less boggy by creating drainage channels and raising the track using excavated material.
- Improve the steep incline past the pine trees that gets muddy and slippery by creating a drainage trench and some cut-off drains.
- Clearing overgrown vegetation.
Please come and lend a hand, especially regular Moirs users. Carpool with your mates.
Bring some hand tools such as spade, grubber, mattock, long handled shovel, slasher, loppers, pruning saw, gloves, gumboots, etc.
Michael from DoC Warkworth has offered to provide guidance and assist us with this work (and hopefully bring along a colleague and some extra tools).
Cheers
Les

weather station
This is more a question for Daron really, as he has put alot into the weather station.
Do we want to take it down and put it some place safe over winter?
Cheers,
Dave.
Hey Dave, its possible to
Hey Dave, its possible to take it down and store it but for the hassle and risk of actually causing more damage than you stop (the anemometer and cables are REALLY hard to take down) I'd rather leave it there. Maybe in spring we can take it apart and check it out. My thoughts are the case needs to be replaced and resealed with new silicon soon as it's had quite a few winters and summer sun on it.
Geoff, you attempted to make it thief proof. Your thoughts?
I agree the hassle of taking
I agree the hassle and potential for damage is not worth it. The weather station was rebuilt and re-installed in Sept last year and apart from needing a re-callibration for the wind vane seems to be OK. We secured it with new brackets and tamper proof screws and raised it further up the pole. I think it is as secure as can reasonably be achieved given that a determined thief could simply cut the pole down. Working Bee - Saturday 8th May 2010
Looking forward to a bit of fresh air and exercise on Saturday morning. Are we permitted to use petrol powered equipment e.g. chainsaw or brush-cutter and if so is there a need for them? there is possibly a restriction on this type of gear to reduce fire hazards in DOC forests.
I don't know if we'll need
I don't know if we'll need them but could be useful.
Suggest you bring them along.
Looks like the dry season has finished now anyway.
DoC guy will be there with a few extra hand tools.
Thanks for helping
Thanks to Dennis, Carlos, Nick, Ana, Kim, Tony, Jeff, Lisa, and Graham.
Also Michael from DoC.
We did a great job.
