Regional Competition this weekend 6 and 7 Feb
At last a weekend forecast that looks half ok. It is time to dust off the vario and other paraphenalia of xc flying and have a little competition. The Auckland Club plans to hold a Local pg comp at the local sites or at Pukemore or Te Hoe on Sat/Sun 6 and 7 Feb. Right now Pukemore looks OK but that could change so watch here for another posting on Thurs night to confirm the meeting place.
If you plan to fly in the NZ Open at Rotorua this is a good opportunity to practice or learn about comp flying. It will be helpful if you go to the competitions page and download the waypoint file to your gps.

Missile Targets...
Hey Evan,
If the Waikato works out you might want to check the implications of "Rocket Day". Real close by to Pukemore and Te Hoe and these things ain't small and go real fast.

Hi Brett, Thanks for the
Hi Brett,
Thanks for the warning. The rocket area is marked on the charts and from memory it is far enough in front of the hills that we are very unlikely to clash. But if we do at least now we will know what the hole in the wing was caused by.
Auckland regional comp is on
The PG comp this weekend is on. Meet at 0930 on Saturday at Autobahn Cafe Bombay. We can organise cars etc from there. BTW, No entry fee! Just be there.
We will be testing the use of Geoff Wong's online scoring system "airscore". This allows pilots to upload their own GPS tracks as an IGC file to a server which checks and scores the flight.
To have a look at some comps using this system go to Geoff's web site http://highcloud.net/xc/ . To upload your epic flights on Saturday evening just click "submit" at the top of the page and choose "Auckland regional 1" from the competition menu. Don't worry if you don't have internet access or it all seems a bit hard for you, we will be able to do it for you.
The weather forecast is for
The weather forecast is for very light winds so be at Bombay at 0930 sharp as we might have to go to the Paeroas. Bring your tent because even if we can fly Pukemore on Saturday the Paeroas look best for Sunday. If you can't make the meeting time then call Evan for an update 021407833.
Uploading to highcloud.net ?!
Seems as like only registered users can upload and there is no registration link on the homepage :-(
I have to load all of the
I have to load all of the pilots in to the airscore database for you to be "registered" users. When you upload a flight now you can use your NZHGPA PIN number in the HGFA box and your surname to identify the track. Sorry Paul I didn't have your PIN number but yout flight was scored anyway. If you email me your NZHGPA member number I will put you in ready for next time.
Leonardo Live
Hi Evan
I notice Alex's track is for Takaka, possibly a leftover from Round 1?
How sad is that, I was watching you at home (had my chance) on Leonado Live around 5:15 pm Saturday, nice "low save" at 150m agl. (Am I correct that the time in Leonardo is out by an hour due to Daylight Saving?)
I like the point in the track at 14:24 where you shoot up at 25.5 m/s, what was that, an actual rocket thermal or some quirk in the GPS tracking?

I was unclipped, speed probe in ( unusually) and got a lucky bubble. Love those.
No that time is correct. I landed at 6pm and there was still a little bit left in the day. It was really quite a nice days flying, just a pity we weren't a little earlier off the hill. We have Xen to thank for getting us off when we did because there was nothing much to launch in to and we were all waiting around for more but he went ahead anyway and showed us the way.
I don't remember anything stronger than about 1.5 so I guess it was a loss of signal on the gps phone and then it caught up again.
