East Auckland Pilots

Adam C's picture

I have recently moved out to Half Moon Bay and was wondering if there were many pilots out this way.   Would be great to share rides if we are all heading in the same direction.   I'm also keen to explore a few of the closer sites such as Duders, The Pa (if still available) and  Musick Point etc if anyone has much  experience there..   Smile  Email or call me on 0211944544.

  Cheers guys

Hi Adam. I live in Ellerslie

Hi Adam. I live in Ellerslie and mostly fly Glover. I've flown at Musick point (E side) years ago but the trees at the takeoff are now so high it's almost impossible to launch there. There are spots on the golf course but you are in direct sight of the clubhouse and may get a bit of a rollicking.

I've also flown from the other side which takes W and WNW. It can get a bit bumpy from the landmass across the water but still totally flyable and safe.

I've also flown between Eastern Beach and Mellons bay using a takeoff at the end of Bleakhouse road. It has some powerlines behind it so be careful launching there !

Glover takes N and NE and has a challenging takeoff and top landing but also works in almost E. At that direction you can soar into wind around into Karaka Bay and down to Glendowie. In that direction we almost always topland or land in Karaka bay as the walk back is easier.

Glover, when it's on gets you mega high and am amazing view back to the city as the sun sets over it. If it's too lifty to topland you can glide to St Helliers and have a beer before walking back !

Some of the HG pilots used to fly there btu haven't seen any there for a while. Last one would have been Paddy doing beatups over the takeoff !

Glover/Musick Point

Hey DaronThanks for your reply.   Very helpful  I went up and checked out the western side of Musick Point the other day and there is a very large grass area facing NW as the road bends to the right through the golf course.    The old site guide mentions a requirement to comply with the mandatory broadcast requirements if flying on the western side of Musick Point.   Can you or anyone elaborate on this please?    Thank you  Adam

I understood it to have the

I understood it to have the same airspace requriements as the Eastern side and Glover Park. Can anyone else expand?

I think that comment in the old printed site guide is now out of date. Check out the up to date site guide page here.

The western side of Musick Point is within Auckland CTA/ C with a height limit of 1500ft ASL but more restrictive is that it is within Auckland Mandatory Broadcast Zone and cannot be flown without an airband radio.
